The Truth About Tribbles, Part 1: With Chekov's assistance, Scotty illicitly continues his transwarp beaming research, first brainstormed with Spock Prime, by sending a small furry pet to his nephew in San Francisco. How much trouble could a little ball of fur that does nothing but purr cause? Meanwhile, the Enterprise encounters a Klingon warship outside of the Empire's borders. When the bird-or-prey gets away, Kirk is ready for a chase, but Spock convinces the captain to investigate where they've been, a small class M planet, Ioto Germanorum IV. Kirk and his crew find a strange, but beautiful new world, a multitude of Mr. Scott's fuzzy little friends, several Klingon bombs, and some very hungry, very large predators. And what about that little furball visiting Scotty’s nephew at Starfleet Academy? Stardate 2259.155

Science and medical personnel analyze the little furballs, hoping to find a way to manage their proliferation. Hendorff records a message for transmission to his parents, telling them about his life and work aboard the Enterprise. His story is woven with recollections of his first meeting with Kirk, the tragic encounter with Nero, his observations about friends, like Uhura, and other crewmates, a difficult away mission where he was seriously injured protecting Commander Spock, and more. Most of all, Hendorff wants to reassure his parents. The stories they've heard about what it means to wear red, are just stories. When he and his colleagues in security put on the uniform, it isn't fear they feel, it's pride, and he'll be fine.

In the original series episode, The Apple, Ensign Hendorff dies quickly and without fanfare on Gamma Trianguli VI, from a plant that shoots thorns.
